German Ifo Business Climate Index Remains at 87.6 Points

(MENAFN) Germany's key business confidence gauge remained frozen at 87.6 points this January, delivering a blow to forecasts that predicted strengthening momentum, data unveiled Monday revealed.

The Ifo Institute for Economic Research published findings from its monthly Business Climate Index survey, drawing responses from roughly 9,000 firms nationwide.

Economists had anticipated the metric would climb to 88.3 points, marking a notable miss against market predictions.

Beneath the headline figure, Germany's Ifo Expectations Index declined marginally to 89.5 points—down from 89.7—while the Current Situation Index posted a modest gain, reaching 85.7 points.

Ifo reported that companies viewed present conditions with cautious optimism, though forward-looking projections weakened.

"The German economy is starting the new year with little momentum," the institute said.

Manufacturing delivered the strongest performance as companies reported improved operational assessments and demonstrated measurably reduced pessimism regarding future prospects.

Construction sentiment advanced as well, propelled by more favorable evaluations of existing conditions. The trade sector experienced uplift as businesses characterized their present circumstances more positively while harboring diminished negativity about what lies ahead.

Services painted a contrasting picture, however, with business confidence deteriorating as firms reported marginally weaker current conditions and adopted increasingly pessimistic outlooks.
